Special edition on Led Zeppelin

Today we're devoting this article to the prestigious English Combo, Led Zeppelin, still considered, more than forty years after its split, as one of the greatest Rock groups: with the powerful voice of their singer, the virtuosity of their guitarist, the herculean and formidable strike force of their drummer and the excellence of their bassist/keyboardist/arranger, they will always be remembered for their artistic and commercial success as well as for their musical influence and their prestige! The Holy Grail of Hard Rock music was born at the very end of the 60s!

PierrotSixties invites us to start year 1969 with the title Good Times Bad Times by Jimmy Page's band!

The fabulous story of Led Zeppelin originated in the year 1968. At the time, a certain Jimmy Page, a well-known guitarist who had played for the Yardbirds, finds himself left alone for a series of concerts already planned. Jimmy starts to seek for other musicians to match his talent. Immediately, John Paul Jones, keyboardist and bassist shows himself. Jimmy Page is then advised by a friend who proposes him to hire Robert Plant for the vocals. All that was missing was the main character for any hard rock band: a drummer. Robert Plant contacted John Bonham and the quartet was born! They chose the name The New Yardbirds, before changing to Led Zeppelin on November 9th, 1968. Here is a title from their 1st album dating from 1969, the super loaded «Communication Breakdown»!

Barely out of the record boxes, Led Zeppelin's first opus was simply called Led Zeppelin, then was signed with the recording firm Atlantic Records. On a musical level, you will find the famous «Dazed and Confused» as well as other great rock classics. Some time later, Led Zeppelin II was released. This second album looked a lot like the first opus but already significantly established the notoriety of the group. Notorious for their music, indeed, but the members of the group also began to be well-known for their violent concerts, the hotel rooms devastated after their departure and their over-excessive drug consumption which was unfortunately commun during the tours carried out by the crew. Let's continue our Rock and Roll momentum with the title from 1970 «Heartbreaker»!

This was now the very end of the year 1970 when the 3rd opus of the group was released (precisely on October 5th, 1970). Musically more nuanced, this new album demonstrates that the group was not limited to a few angry guitar riffs and the aggressive voice of Robert Plant. This new opus is perhaps to be recommended to those who were not lucky enough to have yet discovered Bonham's band. Epileptic rocks, folk ballads, blues explosion, country TNT, everything is there, gold, silver, iron, with the hammer of gods, Robert Plant is solar, Jimmy Page is masterful, Bonham is a giant as usual, and Jones is still a great alchemist of music. From the sessions of the 3rd album of the Combo, we present you the awesome «Immigrant Song»!

In 1971, a few months after their flamboyant 3rd opus went up the charts, Led Zeppelin released a new «ghost album» in the sense that it had no title. This album marked, so to speak, by the hit Stairway to heaven reached an extraordinary success. With the issue of this album, the band reached the musical pinnacle of its career, even if they couldn't be aware of it at the time! Some of the texts, moreover, directly inspired by J. R. R. Tolkien's Lord of the Rings were imbued with occultism. Moreover, over time, this album will become one of the best-selling of the group thanks to classics such as Stairway to Heaven, Rock and Roll, Black Dog, even When the Levee Breaks and all the other rich and varied compositions of the album, ranging from folk to hard rock music. As part of this fundamental opus in the history of the group, we now offer you the excellent title «Four Sticks»!

In 1973, on March 28 of that year precisely, Jimmy Page's band released their unforgettable Houses of the Holy, the first of their albums to finally have a title. This new opus marked, once again, a new musical direction for the group, imbued with funk and even reggae music. The fans of the moment get a little confused by this new sound style. Houses of the Holy, a commercial success, does not however reach the sales of the previous albums. That same year, Robert Plant, whose voice was worn down by the many tours he had made (four hundred and fifty (450) concerts in four years) and by tobacco, underwent vocal cord surgery which left him speechless for several weeks. Dating from 1973, here is the exciting «The Crunge»!

When their contract with Atlantic Records ended in 1974, the group entered the business world and created their own label, Swan Song Records. This label will subsequently produce several groups and will even finance part of The Monty Python's first film, Sacred Grail! On February 24, 1975, the band would release their sixth album Physical Graffiti, number 1 on both sides of the Atlantic, an opus which will notably include the title Kashmir which will become one of the most famous pieces of bravery at the time. Captured during this exciting period musically speaking, in the years 1974/1975, let's listen to the brilliant «Night Flight»!

Beginning of year 1976: in order to capitalize as much as possible on the success acquired after the issue of the previous album, the four friends decided once again to return to the studio for the recording of a new album. Thus, on April 5th of that same year, Presence, their 7th excellent album was released. In the continuity of the double album Physical Graffiti, and recorded in only 18 days in Munich, Germany, it contains the excellent titles «Achilles Last Stand» (which lasts more than ten minutes), «Nobody's Fault But Mine» as well as «Tea for One». For your ears only, the insane interpretation of the «Royal Orleans» from the album Presence originally released in 1976.

At the beginning of 1977, the band began what would then be its biggest American tour since its creation. During the period of time when they were forced to be silent mostly due to the involuntary accident of Robert Plant in 1975, a new generation of rock groups appeared, determined to replace their predecessors. (For instance, AC/DC, Scorpions, Kiss or Judas Priest but also The Sex Pistols, Ramones and The Clash). Led Zeppelin had to react quickly and prove that they were still one of the best rock bands of the moment. Let's have a little auditory glimpse of the madness that could still reign during their stage performances, here recorded in Seattle, 1977!

On July 26th, 1977, with only a few concerts left to perform for Led Zeppelin, Robert Plant is told about the death of his youngest son Karac, barely six years old at the time. This drama will interrupt once again the activities of the band. Led Zeppelin would not return to the studios until the end of 1978. In May 1979, the band announced its return to the stage at the Knebworth festival. The demand for tickets was such that it was necessary to add a second date and on August 4th and 11th, 1979, Led Zeppelin played in front of an audience of 218,000 people and then 187,000 people. This attendance record was unequaled, to date, for this festival. Here is the title Nobody's Fault but Mine in August 1979!

August 20th, 1979, although no one suspected it at that time In Through the Out Door, will unfortunately be the last album with the four members of the band (the following albums will be produced from various sound archives). Originally packaged with a cover in kraft paper, fragile and collectible, the musical work of Led Zeppelin was, back then, due to the enormous work of John Paul Jones. He took a lot of responsibility in the release of the album mostly because of Jimmy Page's addiction to heroin (addiction which originated during the sessions of the album Presence in 1976). For you, the catchy «Hot Dog»!

In 1980, Led Zeppelin made a final 14-date tour around Europe between June 17th and July 7th. The band was expected to give a large series of concerts in the United States (17 dates), three years after the brutal interruption of the previous tour ; then make a scheduled return to the English stages. Rehearsals for the American tour began at the end of the summer in Jimmy Page's house in Bray, where John Bonham was staying for the occasion. On September 25th, the last tragedy occurred and was fatal to the legendary band. John Bonham, the drummer known in the rock world as a heavy drinker, went out the night before and was found lifeless the next morning, leaving the band's fans and the rock world inconsolable. Here is now «We're Gonna Groove» title which opens Led Zeppelin's latest album!

And here is the end of this special tribute to Led Zeppelin by PierrotSixties . Let's finish with «Sugar Mamma»!
