Sempre con l'ex Stems Dom Mariani (voce, chitarra e slide) saldamente al timone, da una decina d'anni i Datura4 sono tra i campioni riconosciuti dello stoner rock e della neo psichedelia australiana. Lontano dai suoi celebrati trascorsi power pop ma pronto a mettere a frutto le innate qualità melodiche della sua scrittura, il leader si tuffa anche in questo sesto LP del quintetto nelle acque burrascose del blues e del boogie rock, affiancato da Joe Grech (chitarra, basso e voce), Bob Patient (organo Hammond, piano elettrico e pianoforte), Stu Loasby (basso) e Warren Hall (batteria). "High On The Low Brow" si apre con una muscolare "Under A Rock" che il sito Kool Kat Music definisce "come i Canned Heat interpretati dagli Status Quo", mentre Michael Toland di The Big Takeover segnala tra gli episodi migliori del disco il blues acustico di "Dirty Laundry" interpretato alla maniera di Johnny Winter, una "Double Dealer" che pulsa a ritmo di funk e una "See My Way" (con il sax di Billy Rogers) che si avventura nei territori del folk rock; Deep Purple, Uriah Heep, Ten Years After, Spooky Tooth, Guns N' Roses e persino i primi Steely Dan sono altri nomi che emergono nelle recensioni di questo album di purissimo "aussie rock".
Still with former Stems member Dom Mariani (vocals, guitar, and slide) firmly at the helm, for about a decade Datura4 have been among the recognized champions of Australian stoner rock and neo-psychedelia. Far from his celebrated power pop past but ready to put the innate melodic qualities of his writing to good use, the leader dives into the stormy waters of blues and boogie rock once again in this sixth LP by the quintet, joined by Joe Grech (guitar, bass, and vocals), Bob Patient (Hammond organ, electric piano, and piano), Stu Loasby (bass), and Warren Hall (drums). High On The Low Brow opens with a muscular Under A Rock that the Kool Kat Music website defines as like Canned Heat played by Status Quo, while Michael Toland of The Big Takeover points out among the best episodes of the record the acoustic blues of Dirty Laundry interpreted in the style of Johnny Winter, a Double Dealer that pulses to a funk rhythm, and a See My Way (with Billy Rogers' sax) that ventures into folk rock territories; Deep Purple, Uriah Heep, Ten Years After, Spooky Tooth, Guns N' Roses, and even early Steely Dan are other names that emerge in the reviews of this album of very pure Aussie rock.
