You might've guessed from the rather proper looking bunch on the front cover that these turn-of-the-hippie-decade Czech popsters are big Procol Harum fans, which they are. I mean, they're pretty much posing in their own little Grand Hotel, aren't they? But what you might NOT have guessed is that little Marie there in the foreground, in her matching mulberry slacks and dominatrix scarf and finely coiffed army helmet do, is one HECK of a sassy little mod soul minx when she wants to be. And more often than not, she wants to be. I mean, right off the bat on “Big Chain,” she coos “I'm looking for a lovemaker!” and I'm instantly on Facebook trying to IM the girl. That one, and the instantly lovable cover of Motown classic “Chain of Fools” (so the chick has a fascination with chains – see what I mean?) are tremendous East European swinging mod freakbeat soul classics, if that's even a genre. You'd never know it, but the girl can swing. And when she does, the Flamingo Group falls in nicely behind her, probably in chains. When she's NOT strutting and cooing out front, and some dude named Vladimir Figar, organist natch, takes over, it's the Prague chapter of the Procol Harum fan club, almost down to copyright infringement territory. Which isn't bad at all providing you're a fan of Procol Harum, which I am. So it's nice to hear how they Procolize the heck out of Bobby Hebb's “Sunny,” stretching it out to nearly 7 minutes with a big giant cathedral organ workout. It's infinitely more fun than what the Vanilla Fudge used to do, and makes Bobby Hebb sound like “Repent Walpurgis.” The other one, something called “Quasimodo's Dream” which this time DOES clock in over 7 minutes, is so stunningly close in sound to a Procol instrumental, you could play this for Gary Brooker and he'd ask probably ask you how you got into his house. This is their soul, and their prog, and their shakin' go-go East European mod freakbeat new genre classification too. And it's looking for a lovemaker. Any volunteers?
